Arthur Smith Set to Become Ohio State’s New Offensive Coordinator

Ohio State University has appointed Arthur Smith as its new offensive coordinator. Smith, who previously served as the Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator from 2024 to 2025, is set to lead an Ohio State offense featuring top talents. This roster includes Jeremiah Smith, considered the best receiver in the nation, and Julian Sayin, a Heisman finalist quarterback.

Ohio State’s Search for a New Offensive Coordinator

Head coach Ryan Day faced challenges after promoting Brian Hartline last season as Ohio State lost its final two games to Miami and Indiana. Recognizing the need for a seasoned play caller, Day opted to reach outside the program to find a new offensive strategist. Arthur Smith’s extensive coaching experience makes him a fitting choice.

Arthur Smith’s Coaching Background

  • Served as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons from 2021 to 2023.
  • Was the Tennessee Titans’ offensive coordinator from 2019 to 2020, achieving top rankings.
  • His last notable performance was in 2020 when the Titans ranked third in yards per game.
  • His tenure with the Falcons in 2023 saw them finish 17th in total offense and 26th in scoring.

Smith will lead the offensive team at Ohio State as their 11th assistant. Unless changes are made to the staff structure, he will not participate in recruiting. His primary focus will be on calling plays and managing the offensive unit, relying on his extensive background in various coaching roles.

The Offensive Landscape at Ohio State

The Buckeyes return a strong offense capable of maintaining high performance. Key returning players include:

  • Jeremiah Smith – Best receiver in college football.
  • Julian Sayin – Heisman finalist quarterback.
  • Four starting offensive linemen.
  • Starting running back.
  • Brandon Inniss – Starting slot receiver.

These athletes have developed under Ryan Day’s offensive scheme since he took over in 2019. Smith’s appointment aims to enhance the existing talent without overhauling the system that has proven effective.

Future Expectations with Smith at the Helm

The integration of Arthur Smith allows Day more flexibility to oversee the entire program as a CEO. With two former NFL coordinators on the staff—Smith and defensive coordinator Matt Patricia—Ohio State is poised for a promising season ahead.
