Eagles Considered Arthur Smith for Offensive Coordinator Before Ohio State Move
The Philadelphia Eagles had shown interest in Arthur Smith, the former offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Reports suggest that their pursuit occurred before Smith accepted a position at Ohio State.
Eagles’ Interest in Arthur Smith
According to NFL insider Dianna Russini, Smith was engaged in discussions with both the Eagles and the Tennessee Titans, both of whom were seeking offensive coordinators this offseason. However, it remains unclear if the Eagles conducted a formal interview with him.
Previous Conversations and Interviews
This is not the first time the Eagles have considered Smith. In January 2021, the team interviewed him for their head coach vacancy, reportedly coming away quite impressed with his qualifications.
Smith’s Coaching Journey
- After his interview with the Eagles, Smith became the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons.
- During his time with the Falcons, he recorded a 7-10 record for three consecutive seasons.
- Overall, Smith finished his tenure with a 21-30 record before being let go.
- Following his stint with Atlanta, he served as the offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Move to Ohio State
Smith’s recent decision to join Ohio State comes as he replaces Brian Hartline, who was appointed as the new head coach for South Florida. Hartline had taken over the position previously held by Chip Kelly.
While the Eagles’ desire for Smith to replace Kevin Patullo remains uncertain, it is now a moot point, as he is committed to his new role at Ohio State.
