Miami Dolphins Secure Bobby Slowik as Offensive Coordinator
The Miami Dolphins have announced the hiring of Bobby Slowik as their offensive coordinator. This decision follows the appointment of Jeff Hafley as the head coach. Slowik and Hafley previously worked together on the San Francisco 49ers coaching staff from 2017 to 2018, establishing a strong professional connection.
Bobby Slowik’s Coaching Background
Bobby Slowik brings a wealth of experience to the Dolphins, having spent 13 seasons as an NFL assistant. His previous role was as the offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans. However, he was dismissed after the 2024 season due to significant underperformance in the team’s offense.
Dolphins’ Recent Offensive Struggles
- The Dolphins ranked 26th in yards gained per game at 300.7.
- They placed 25th in passing yards, averaging 185.5 per game.
- The scoring average was 20.4 points per game, also ranking 25th.
These rankings marked the worst stats during Mike McDaniel’s tenure as head coach. Issues such as receiver assignments and route running hampered the team’s offensive productivity.
Performance Under Slowik
During his time with the Texans, Slowik’s offenses showed mixed results. In the 2023 season, Houston ranked 12th in yards and 14th in points. However, the following season deteriorated, with rankings falling to 22nd in yards and 19th in points.
Challenges Ahead for the Dolphins
Slowik faces a challenging task with the Dolphins. The team is exploring options to upgrade quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who struggled with his throwing arm’s velocity. Tagovailoa was benched late in the season, raising concerns about his confidence level.
Rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers, selected in the seventh round of the 2025 draft, started the last three games of the season. However, his reliability as an NFL starter remains unproven.
The Slowik Coaching Legacy
Coaching runs in the Slowik family. Bobby’s father, Bob, held various defensive coordinator roles across the NFL, while his brother Ryan has been Miami’s defensive backs coach since 2022. Another brother, Steve, is a pro scout for the San Francisco 49ers.
Recent Staff Additions and Interviews
The Dolphins recently added Chris Taber, formerly of the Buffalo Bills, as their special teams coordinator. This move highlights efforts to solidify their coaching staff.
Additionally, Miami has interviewed Clint Hurtt, the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive line coach, for their defensive coordinator position. Hurtt previously served as defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks and was part of the Eagles’ Super Bowl victory in 2024.
As the Dolphins continue to reshape their coaching staff, they are focused on improving their performance on both sides of the ball. The upcoming season will undoubtedly present new challenges and opportunities for growth.
