  • Protest Goals: Organizers aimed to create a peaceful environment, urging participants to hold hands without resorting to aggressive slogans or provocations.

Opposition to Military Site

The protest aimed to convey a strong message against the establishment of a military polygon in the region. Following the demonstration, attendees were invited to a town square for discussions and signing a petition against the project.

Responses from Government Officials

In the wake of the protest, Lithuania’s Minister of National Defense, Robertas Kaunas, confirmed the military training ground’s establishment would proceed as planned. During his address, he assured residents that relocation would only involve 13 properties, only one of which is inhabited.

Details on Property Acquisition

The plan includes purchasing these properties with a compensation package. The government has allocated €40 million for property acquisition related to the military polygon. Property owners affected will have the option to remain or relocate, with assurances of fair compensation for their land.

Community Engagement

The opposition from the local community led to discussions between residents and high-ranking officials, including President Gitanas Nausėda and Chief of the Defense Staff Raimundas Vaikšnoras. Various ministers, including those from defense, economics, and environmental sectors, also engaged with the community.

According to Minister Kaunas, a consultation hub has been set up in Kapčiamiestis to address residents’ questions and concerns, demonstrating a commitment to transparency and community involvement regarding the controversial project.
