YLW Unveils $108 Million Expansion at B.C.’s Second Busiest Airport

Kelowna International Airport (YLW) is embarking on a transformative journey with an ambitious $108 million expansion project. As British Columbia’s second busiest airport, YLW aims to enhance passenger experience and capacity amid growing demand for air travel in the Okanagan Valley.

Expansion Details

Scheduled to open on January 28, 2026, the terminal expansion will add over 60,000 square feet. This marks the largest expansion in YLW’s history. Key features of the expansion include:

  • A new departures lounge with direct access to multiple gates.
  • An enhanced security screening area using Canadian Air Transport Security Authority’s next-generation technology.
  • Improved food and beverage options, including the Ellison Field Taphouse.
  • Modern digital displays and upgraded interior design incorporating B.C. mass timber.

Upcoming Milestones

Exciting events precede the grand opening. On January 24, 2026, YLW will welcome the largest aircraft to operate at the airport, a Boeing 787-900 Dreamliner, marking a significant milestone.

As part of a comprehensive improvement plan, further renovations will occur in the existing terminal. This will include:

  • Renovation of 13,000 square feet to increase amenities.
  • Major enhancements such as a new washroom concourse and a pet relief station.

Phase Two and Future Developments

Phase 2 of the expansion is planned for 2030. This will feature a relocation of the domestic arrivals area and higher-capacity baggage carousels. The project also includes an enlarged international arrivals area and additional upgrades to the Canada Border Services Agency facilities.

Overall, the combined improvements through 2033 are forecasted to cost $422 million.

Passenger Growth Trends

YLW has recently seen significant passenger growth, with 2.134 million passengers recorded in 2024. Projections indicate that 2025 may set new records, with over 2.095 million passengers noted before December.

Long-term Projections

According to YLW’s 2045 Airport Master Plan, passenger numbers could soar between 2.85 million to 4.4 million by 2045. This forecast includes extensive plans for further terminal expansions and improvements to runways and taxiways. The current expansion aligns with these strategic goals, ensuring YLW remains a vital transportation hub in Canada.

The City of Kelowna owns YLW and is funding the entire project through airport revenues and improvement fees. With the growth of YLW, the airport is set to strengthen its role as a key gateway for tourism and economic development in British Columbia.
