Finished SR 520 Bridge: Transforming Daily Commutes Across Lake Washington

Sound Transit is set to launch the Link light rail across Lake Washington via the Interstate 90 bridge on March 28, marking a significant milestone in transportation for the region. This new segment, known as the Crosslake Connection, will link the Eastside and Seattle for the first time via rail.

Key Details of the Crosslake Connection

The opening of the Crosslake Connection enhances the 2 Line and brings total light rail coverage to 63 miles. Here are some notable features of this expansion:

  • Opening Date: March 28
  • New Stations: Mercer Island, Judkins Park
  • Total Light Rail System Miles: Increased from 55 to 63
  • Trains Frequency: Every 8 minutes during peak hours
  • Service Hours: 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. (Mon-Sat), 6 a.m. to midnight (Sun)

Innovative Engineering

This project is unique as it features the world’s first light rail system operating on a floating bridge, a crucial development that enables the connection across Lake Washington. Sound Transit’s CEO, Dow Constantine, emphasized the significance of this innovation, stating that it dramatically improves mobility and quality of life in the region.

Background and Challenges

The Crosslake Connection is the final component of the long-debated East Link project, which has faced delays and budget overruns. Originally slated for completion years ago, the project is over five years behind schedule and has incurred additional costs in the tens of millions.

Despite these challenges, Sound Transit is celebrating this expansion as a transformational achievement that provides a unified rail system for the region. The opening day festivities and additional service details will be shared closer to March 28, as the agency prepares for the anticipated launch of this new light rail service.

Looking Ahead

The upcoming launch reflects a broader trend of growth in the region’s public transit system. Sound Transit has successfully opened six light rail expansions within the last five years, with Pinehurst Station also expected to open later this year, further enhancing connectivity in the Seattle metropolitan area.
