Nova Scotia Skip Black Targets Scotties Victory
A new chapter is unfolding at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, as Nova Scotia’s skip, Christina Black, aims for victory. This year’s event takes place from January 23 to February 1, showcasing 18 teams vying for the prestigious national title.
Essential Competitors
Among the notable participants are:
- Kerri Einarson – Four-time national champion.
- Kaitlyn Lawes – Two-time Olympic champion.
- Rachel Homan – Five-time champion, absent this year.
- Christina Black – Emerging contender from Halifax.
Christina Black’s Journey
Christina Black is riding a wave of momentum after a semifinal appearance at last year’s event. Recently, her team reached the final of the Montana’s Canadian Curling Trials. Following a team practice, Black expressed enthusiasm about transitioning from that experience to the Scotties.
“That was an amazing, incredible experience at the Trials. Now, we’re just turning the focus to this,” Black stated.
Anticipation and Strategy
Black’s team features vice Jill Brothers and a three-player front made up of Karlee Everist, Jennifer Baxter, and Marlee Powers. Given the competitive landscape, they recognize their realistic chance at winning.
“We know we have a realistic shot at winning this, so that’s our plan,” Black said.
Challengers in the Field
The competition includes teams from various provinces, such as:
- Taylor Reese-Hansen – British Columbia
- Beth Peterson – Manitoba
- Selena Sturmay – Alberta
- Krista Scharf – Northern Ontario
Format and Expectations
With many teams featuring both veterans and newcomers, the round-robin play began on Friday night. Black is set to face Nunavut in her opener.
“We’re not going to know what to expect from some of these teams,” Brothers noted. “It keeps it very exciting.”
Looking Ahead
The winning team at this year’s Scotties will represent Canada at the world women’s curling championship from March 14 to 22 in Calgary. As Christina Black and her team prepare, they remain focused on their goal of turning their gold jerseys into red ones.
