Kano Governor and Lawmakers Abandon NNPP with Local Chairmen

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has decided to resign from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP). This departure includes a significant break from the party, as 21 members of the State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen are also leaving. This announcement was made on Friday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Tofa.

The formal resignation took effect on January 23, 2026. In his official letter to the NNPP’s chairman of the Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Yusuf expressed deep gratitude for the opportunities provided by the party. He appreciated the support he received since he began his political career in 2022.

Reasons for Resignation

However, Governor Yusuf cited ongoing internal conflicts as his main reason for leaving. He pointed to leadership disagreements and legal challenges that have caused divisions within the party.

  • Leadership disputes weakening party cohesion
  • Legal battles pending in courts
  • Disenfranchisement among party members

Yusuf stated, “The growing disenfranchisement among party members has created deep divisions,” referring to these issues as becoming increasingly irreconcilable. He emphasized that these challenges have led to uncertainty at both state and national levels.

Commitment to Kano’s Future

The governor’s resignation, he noted, is guided by the broader interests of Kano State. He stressed that the decision was made in good faith, aimed at promoting peace and unity. Yusuf remains committed to the progress of the state despite these political shifts.

Kabiru Zubairu, the NNPP Diso-Chiranchi Ward Secretary, acknowledged the receipt of the resignation letter. He commended Yusuf for his performance in various sectors, including infrastructure, health, and education.

Political Dynamics in Kano State

This political maneuver comes shortly after a closed-door meeting between Governor Yusuf and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. This meeting has heightened speculation regarding Yusuf’s future political trajectory.

As these developments unfold, the landscape of Kano politics appears to be shifting dramatically, with potential implications for the NNPP and the state’s governance.
