Microsoft Enhances Notepad with AI Features and New Interface

Microsoft has made significant updates to Notepad, enhancing its functionality and user interface. The latest version, 11.2512.10.0, introduces a new feature called “What’s New,” designed to keep users informed about recent changes and additions.

Introducing the “What’s New” Feature

Upon startup, users will see the “What’s New” screen. This dialog provides an overview of the latest features, making it easier for both new and returning users to navigate the application. Users can close or reopen this feature by clicking the megaphone icon located in the toolbar.

New Features and AI Enhancements

With the introduction of version 11.2512.10.0, Notepad gains several new features:

  • Additional formatting options
  • Expanded Markdown support, including strikethrough formatting and nested lists
  • Enhanced AI streaming capabilities

In June, Microsoft added basic Markdown support, followed by the addition of tables in November 2025. The latest update focuses on improving AI performance, allowing quicker access to results for Write, Rewrite, and Summarize functionalities. Users will experience faster previews without needing to wait for full responses, provided they are signed in with a Microsoft account.

Continued Evolution of Microsoft Tools

Alongside Notepad, Microsoft has updated its Paint application, adding an AI feature named “Coloring Book.” This feature transforms user-defined text into coloring pages, although its practicality is questionable. Additionally, a tolerance slider has been introduced for the fill tool to enhance precision in editing.

Both Notepad and Paint have evolved from their original, simple designs to become advanced tools. However, these enhancements may complicate the experience for users seeking straightforward editing functionalities.

Despite users encountering recent bugs in Windows updates, Microsoft’s progress in integrating AI features reflects their commitment to innovation. The updates to Notepad and Paint mark a notable shift in how basic applications can cater to modern user needs.
