An Arctic air mass is currently sweeping across Canada, bringing intense cold temperatures to several regions. The phenomenon is particularly pronounced in Western Canada, where the cold is being documented by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).
Impact on Western Canada
The severe cold spell is expected to persist through the weekend. The Prairies, northwestern Ontario, Nunavut, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba are under orange weather warnings as of Thursday due to the extreme conditions.
- Manitoba reports wind chill values ranging from –45 to –50°C, lasting until Monday.
- Chill values in northwestern Alberta are forecasted between –40 and –50°C.
- Northwestern Ontario is experiencing a prolonged cold snap with dangerous wind chills.
Health and Safety Warnings
The ECCC has cautioned that frostbite can occur within minutes on exposed skin, especially under wind chill conditions. Residents and visitors are advised to keep emergency supplies in their vehicles, including:

- Jumper cables
Outdoor workers are encouraged to take regular breaks to warm up to minimize health risks associated with the cold weather. The agency suggests dressing in layers that can be adjusted as needed, emphasizing the importance of wind-resistant outer layers.
Polar Vortex Influence
Meteorologist Natalie Hasell from ECCC explained that while this Arctic event may not break existing temperature records, its intensity is significant due to the polar vortex. It affects southern and central Saskatchewan and Manitoba, creating a consistent influx of cold air across the Prairies.
“The polar vortex sitting over Quebec allows for cold air to flow downwards without any geographical barriers,” Hasell stated.

In addition to the cold temperatures, ECCC has also issued yellow-level snow squall warnings in parts of Quebec, including Montreal. Northern and southwestern Ontario are also affected.
