OC Transpo Pulls Trains from Line 1 Due to Technical Issues

Residents and officials in Ottawa are expressing their frustration following the announcement of new technical issues with the city’s light rail transit (LRT) system. Starting January 21, fewer trains will operate on Line 1 of the O-Train as a precautionary measure due to problems identified with cartridge bearing assemblies, according to a memo from Troy Charter, Interim General Manager of the Transit Services Department.

Operational Changes on Line 1

As part of this update, trains that have surpassed 100,000 kilometers in mileage will be removed from service. Consequently, Line 1 will now run with either single or double-car trains. Despite this change, officials assure that the current frequency of service will be maintained.

However, some councillors are concerned about the impact on commuters. Councillor Jeff Leiper noted that rush hour service is increasingly becoming crowded, with many passengers facing difficulties reaching their destinations. “Business owners have expressed their frustration as workers struggle to arrive on time,” Leiper commented on social media.

The Rideau Transit Group has identified a condition known as spalling, where flakes detach from the metal within the axle mechanisms, creating potential risks for bearing failure. The memo stresses that this issue is unrelated to the earlier axle bearing assembly problems.
