Norway Provides Air Defense Missiles to Ukraine

In response to ongoing missile threats, Norway has stepped up its military support to Ukraine by providing a substantial shipment of air defense missiles. This initiative aims to bolster the Norwegian-developed NASAMS system, which is essential for safeguarding Ukrainian airspace amid escalating attacks.

New Military Support from Norway

Recently, Norwegian Minister of Defence Tore O. Sandvik met with Ukraine’s new Minister of Defence, Mykhailo Fedorov. Fedorov was appointed on January 14, 2026. This meeting marked a crucial step in formalizing military assistance amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Norway views air defense as a critical priority in its military aid to Ukraine. To further this commitment, the government has allocated NOK 85 billion for both civil and military support through the Nansen programme in 2026. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre emphasized the importance of this support, stating, “We will continue to support Ukraine in the fight they are facing.”

Impact of Russian Attacks

As Russia intensifies its strikes with drones and missiles, Ukraine’s energy infrastructure faces severe threats. The attacks have led to significant energy disruptions, particularly challenging during the frigid winter months, with temperatures plunging to minus fifteen degrees Celsius.

Effectiveness of NASAMS Air Defense System

The NASAMS air defense system, which has been donated by several nations including the United States, Canada, and Lithuania, has demonstrated effective capabilities against Russian missile threats. Norway, as the system owner, has facilitated the timely delivery of missiles to Ukraine.

  • Norway has quickly delivered air defense missiles to Ukraine.
  • Collaboration with the United States has been pivotal for rapid support.
  • The NASAMS system is vital for protecting Ukrainian citizens from air strikes.

Defence Minister Tore O. Sandvik remarked on the urgency of this assistance, noting the nightly threats posed by missile and drone attacks. Large portions of Kyiv currently lack heating, water, and electricity due to these strikes. In a recent meeting with President Zelensky in Kyiv, Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide reinforced the necessity of military aid, highlighting the urgent need for effective air defense solutions.
