Google’s AI Mode Accesses Gmail, Photos for Personalized Responses
Google is enhancing its AI Mode, introducing a feature called “Personal Intelligence,” which aims to deliver personalized responses by utilizing data from Gmail and Google Photos. Announced on a Thursday, this upgrade allows users to receive tailored suggestions across various Google services.
Personal Intelligence Integration
Last week, Google introduced Personal Intelligence within the Gemini app. This feature connects multiple Google services, including Gmail, Photos, Search, and YouTube history, ensuring a more personalized user experience. Now, users of AI Mode can expect more relevant responses as this capability rolls out to AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S.
By leveraging the extensive user data already present in its ecosystem, Google aims to provide customized experiences that competitors may struggle to offer. However, there is an opt-in feature, allowing users to disable Personal Intelligence at their discretion, addressing privacy concerns.
How Personal Intelligence Works
According to Robby Stein, Google’s VP of Product for Search, this feature enables recommendations that fit seamlessly into users’ lives. Users will no longer need to repeatedly explain their tastes or plans, as the AI selects appropriate suggestions from the start.
For instance, when planning a family vacation, AI Mode can analyze Gmail for hotel bookings and Google Photos for past travel snapshots to suggest a customized itinerary. This could result in unique recommendations, such as an ice cream parlor inspired by previous photos taken during outings.
Shopping Benefits
Personal Intelligence also enhances shopping experiences. For example, if a user needs a new coat for an upcoming trip, AI Mode can consider past purchases and flight details from Gmail to suggest suitable options. Recommendations may include versatile coats that match the destination’s climate and the user’s style preferences.
Users can ask personalized queries like:
- “Create a scavenger hunt for [partner’s name] to celebrate our anniversary with hints about us.”
- “I’m decorating [child’s name]’s bedroom; suggest a theme and decor ideas.”
Importantly, Google clarifies that AI Mode does not train directly on personal Gmail inboxes or Google Photos. Instead, it focuses on specific user prompts and the AI’s generated responses.
