Federal Government Allocates $10 Million to Stratford Wellness Center Proposal

The federal government is investing $10 million in Stratford’s community wellness center initiative. This funding is part of the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings Program. Stratford Mayor Steve Ogden highlighted the project’s significance, aiming to support the town’s growing community needs.

Planned Construction of the Wellness Center

The proposed wellness center will cater to various community needs. Key features are expected to include:

  • An ice rink
  • An indoor turf field
  • A youth center

Mayor Ogden noted that the project’s first phase estimates a cost of about $67 million. Additional funding will be necessary to complete the facility.

Local Economic Impact and Future Plans

Cardigan MP Kent MacDonald emphasized the importance of this project for local employment opportunities and economic growth. Since taking office in April, securing funding for the wellness center has been a top priority for him.

MacDonald stated, “We want to create earning opportunities and good jobs. This is our strategy.” He believes that local contractors will be chosen to ensure the project utilizes Canadian resources and labor.

Addressing Economic Challenges

Both Ogden and MacDonald see the wellness center as a way to mitigate economic challenges posed by U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods. Ogden stated, “There will be a return on investment in terms of jobs and economic activity for Stratford, Prince Edward Island, and Canada.”

Timeline and Design Plans

Mayor Ogden has expressed hopes to begin the design phase and work on the building’s foundation by this summer. He aims to break ground in the coming fall. The community is looking forward to the benefits this wellness center will bring to Stratford and beyond.
