Giants’ Veteran Exec Kevin Abrams Departs After 27 Years, Sources Confirm

Kevin Abrams, the senior vice president of football operations and strategy for the New York Giants, is departing after a remarkable 27-year tenure with the organization, multiple sources have confirmed. This news marks a significant shift in the Giants’ structure as they transition into a new era under head coach John Harbaugh.

Kevin Abrams’ Legacy with the Giants

Throughout his long career, Abrams played a crucial role in the Giants’ operations, particularly as the assistant general manager for two decades. He worked under four different general managers starting from Ernie Accorsi and was part of the front office that secured two Super Bowl championships.

Notably, he also served as the interim general manager during the 2017 season and managed player contracts, having begun as the team’s salary cap analyst. His influence on the team’s strategies and negotiations has been substantial over the years.

Coaching Changes Under John Harbaugh

The departure of Abrams coincides with Harbaugh’s second day on the job. Harbaugh has already begun implementing changes within the coaching staff. Several defensive coaches, including special teams coordinator Michael Ghorbial and defensive line coach Andre Patterson, are not returning for the upcoming season.

Coaching Staff Updates

  • Michael Ghorbial: Special teams coordinator for two seasons, previously with the New York Jets.
  • Andre Patterson: Defensive line coach who faced cancer treatment in 2025.

During this restructuring, the Giants’ medical and athletic training staff will also see changes. Head athletic trainer Ronnie Barnes, who has been with the team since 1980, will maintain a role but with adjusted responsibilities. The new regime under Harbaugh is expected to bring in additional staff, particularly those with connections to his previous experience in Baltimore.

New Organizational Structure

This transition represents a significant shift in the Giants’ organizational structure. Traditionally, the head coach reported to the general manager, but now Harbaugh will report directly to ownership. This arrangement resembles his prior structure in Baltimore and showcases the level of trust placed in him by the team’s ownership.

As Harbaugh settles into his role, he is likely to bring several staff members from the Ravens to assist in building his vision for the Giants. This restructuring effort includes requests for interviews across various departments, showcasing Harbaugh’s proactive approach to assembling his team.

With these changes, the New York Giants are poised for a new chapter, redefining their strategies and processes under the guidance of a new head coach and the departure of a long-standing executive.
