GM Shifts Buick SUV Production from China to the US
General Motors (GM) is shifting production of its Buick SUV from China to the United States. This change marks a significant stride in the automaker’s efforts to bolster domestic manufacturing.
Details of the Production Shift
GM is ceasing the China-based production of the Buick Envision, a midsize SUV that has been imported to the U.S. since 2017. The company plans to manufacture the next generation of the Envision at its assembly facility in the Kansas City area beginning in 2028.
- Vehicle: Buick Envision
- Current Production Location: China
- New Production Location: Kansas City, U.S.
- Start Date: 2028
Reasons Behind the Move
This strategic decision aims to enhance GM’s manufacturing footprint in the U.S. and support job creation domestically. Since 2018, GM has faced a 25% tariff on vehicles imported from China, without receiving exemptions during the Trump administration.
Impact of Tariffs
The tariffs heightened scrutiny on Chinese imports, particularly targeting vehicles like the Envision. Critics, including the United Auto Workers union and political representatives from battleground states like Michigan and Ohio, voiced concerns over reliance on Chinese manufacturing.
Additional Production Changes
In addition to the Buick Envision, GM is also relocating production for other models:
- Chevrolet Equinox: Moving from Mexico to Kansas City; production begins in 2027.
- Chevy Blazer: Production transferring to Spring Hill, Tennessee, from Mexico; expected in 2027.
Recently, GM initiated limited production of the all-electric Chevrolet Bolt at the Kansas City plant. Once this phase concludes, the facility will exclusively produce combustion-engine vehicles.
These shifts underscore GM’s commitment to expanding its U.S. manufacturing operations, adapting to market demands, and navigating the complexities of international trade.
