Alula Baby Formula Recalled Over Contamination Concerns

A recall alert has been issued for two specific types of baby formula over contamination concerns. The products in question are Alula Gold Reflux infant formula and Alula Colic & Constipation infant formula, both produced by Sanulac Nutritionals Australia Pty Ltd. This decision stems from fears that these formulas may contain a harmful toxin.

Details of the Recall

The affected baby formulas include:

  • Alula Gold Reflux: 900g (suitable for ages 0-12 months)
  • Alula Colic & Constipation: 850g (suitable for ages 0-12 months)

The recall specifically targets:

  • Alula Gold Reflux with a use-by date of March 17, 2027, and batch number 8000003387.
  • Alula Colic & Constipation with a use-by date of March 17, 2027, and batch number 8000003407.

Health Risks

These formulas may contain cereulide, a toxin produced by the Bacillus cereus microorganism. Exposure to this toxin can lead to symptoms such as:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Unusual lethargy

Symptoms can appear within 30 minutes to six hours after consumption and generally resolve within 24 hours. Although the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has stated there have been no reported illnesses linked to this recall in Australia, parents are urged to exercise caution.

Advice for Parents and Caregivers

Families in possession of the affected formulas are advised by FSANZ not to use them. Instead, they should return the products to their place of purchase for a full refund. Other Alula products and formulas from different brands remain unaffected and are available at various retailers.

Where to Purchase

The recalled products have been sold at major retailers including:

  • Coles
  • Woolworths
  • Pharmacies
  • Amazon
  • Independent retailers such as IGA, Big W, and Costco

Sanulac Nutritionals Australia has emphasized its commitment to customer safety. According to General Manager David Pattinson, this voluntary recall is a precautionary measure aimed at ensuring the well-being of families.

Recent Similar Recalls

This recall follows a recent action by Nestlé, which also recalled its 400g tins of Alfamino Infant Formula due to similar contamination concerns. Parents are encouraged to seek medical advice if they have concerns regarding their infant’s health.
