Despite ongoing Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure, Ukraine has assured its population and businesses that gas supply will remain uninterrupted. This statement comes from the head of Naftogaz, the state energy company.
Ukraine’s Commitment to Uninterrupted Gas Supply
According to Sergii Koretskyi, consumers are fully supplied with gas, even in the face of systematic assaults on gas infrastructure by Russia. He addressed concerns circulating on social media, specifically the Telegram app, which suggested that restrictions on gas supply were underway. Koretskyi categorically denied these claims, emphasizing that “there are no restrictions.” He also reaffirmed the commitment to maintain gas supply levels.
Impact of Russian Attacks on Energy Infrastructure
Since the invasion in 2022, Russia has consistently targeted Ukraine’s energy sector. This includes attacks on electricity producers, transmission systems, and gas facilities. As a result of these assaults, Ukraine’s power-generating capacity has been significantly reduced by approximately 50%. The country has also been forced to increase gas imports from the European Union and the United States, as domestic production has been affected.
New Leadership and Future Plans
In an effort to address these challenges, Ukraine’s parliament recently appointed Denys Shmyhal as the new energy minister. Shmyhal, a former Prime Minister, stated that his primary objective is to restore domestic gas production. He highlighted the urgent need to:
