PKK Supports SDG in Syria, Accuses Turkey

The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has issued a statement affirming support for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), despite ongoing tensions between the SDF and the Syrian government. Murat Karayılan, a senior PKK official and commander of the People’s Defense Forces (HPG), emphasized the group’s commitment to Rojava, stating, “We will not abandon Rojava, no matter the cost.” He criticized the plans to reshape the region, arguing that they undermine the rights and status of the Kurdish people.

Accusations Against Turkey

Karayılan accused Turkey of playing an active role in the conflict between the SDF and the Syrian army. He claimed that attacks against the SDF are orchestrated under an “international agreement” involving Turkey, the Syrian interim president Ahmed Shara, and the group Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). He stated, “The Turkish state has an active role in this conspiracy, as we see their warplanes and reconnaissance aircraft in action.” Karayılan stressed that these attacks are seen as a violation of Kurdish achievements and described the situation as a deliberate conspiracy involving both international and local powers.

Calls for Resistance from the SDF

Just before PKK’s announcement, SDF called for resistance against the Syrian army. In a statement released in Kurdish, the SDF condemned the “direct and barbaric attacks” on their territories since January 6. They urged Kurds worldwide, including those in Europe, to unite and join the resistance.

SDG’s Statement on Kurdish Struggles

  • The SDF reminded the world of their role in defeating ISIS.
  • They highlighted ongoing genocidal actions being committed by the Syrian government.
  • The statement called on people to raise their voices and remember their sacrifices.

Failed Negotiations Between SDF and Syrian Government

In recent talks, SDF commander Mazlum Abdi and interim president Ahmed Shara ended discussions without success. According to Foza Yusuf, a senior official in the PYD, the Syrian government demanded unconditional surrender. “We are told that we must hand over everything, return to the pre-2011 situation, and accept all their demands,” she explained, indicating an outright rejection of the Syrian regime’s terms.

Clashes Amidst Ongoing Tensions

During these negotiations, clashes erupted around two prisons in northeastern Syria housing ISIS members. Reports indicate that approximately 120 ISIS detainees managed to escape amid the chaos. Following this incident, a curfew was imposed by the Syrian government as search operations began. Initial Kurdish reports had suggested around 1,500 detainees had escaped.

International Implications

In a related development, Ahmed Shara discussed the importance of Syria’s territorial integrity and the protection of Kurdish rights in a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump. The two leaders agreed on the necessity of continued cooperation in the fight against ISIS.

This evolving situation reflects the complex dynamics between territorial control, ethnic rights, and international diplomacy in Syria. As tensions rise, the implications for the Kurdish population and regional stability remain significant.
