Maryland to Host Smaller Version of Las Vegas’ Iconic Sphere
A new immersive entertainment venue, inspired by Las Vegas’ Sphere, is set to develop in National Harbor, Maryland. This project, announced by state and county officials alongside Sphere Entertainment, aims to offer a smaller yet captivating experience for visitors.
Maryland’s Smaller Sphere: Key Details
The proposed venue will feature:
- 6,000 seats for attendees
- Advanced LED displays
- Intricate special effects
This new Sphere concept is part of a broader initiative to establish venues in major cities globally. The original Sphere in Las Vegas, which opened in 2023, boasts an 18,600-seat capacity.
Economic Impact and Job Creation
Maryland leaders believe the Sphere will become a crucial landmark and economic driver in the region. Located within the National Harbor, a bustling 350-acre area along the Potomac River, this venue is expected to significantly enhance local tourism.
Statistics indicate that National Harbor attracts approximately 15 million visitors annually. Governor Wes Moore stated that this project represents “one of the largest economic development projects in Prince George’s County history.”
Job opportunities will arise as follows:
- 2,500 jobs during the construction phase
- 4,750 jobs once operational
Additionally, the Sphere could generate millions in revenue for both the county and state, with funding sources estimated to include around $200 million in state, local, and private incentives.
Future Developments and Public Engagement
While the timeline for construction and completion has not been disclosed, public hearings regarding the 2027 fiscal year budget are set to take place. This budget proposes a $10 million operating grant for the Sphere.
Aisha Braveboy, the executive for Prince George’s County, highlighted ongoing discussions about necessary financing and tax incentives. Changes to state laws are also anticipated as part of the project’s progression.
Public permits and zoning requirements will undergo review processes to ensure community involvement. The aim is to create a venue that uplifts the local economy and enhances the Maryland entertainment landscape.
