Why I’m Finally Giving Up on Foldable Phones After 5 Years
After five years of experimenting with foldable phones, I’ve decided to abandon this once-promising technology. The journey began with the release of the Galaxy Z Flip in 2021. Initially, the concept of foldable devices seemed revolutionary and futuristic.
The Evolution of My Foldable Experience
My experiences with foldable phones spanned from 2021 to 2025. During this time, I utilized multiple Flip models and eventually bought the Galaxy Z Fold 5. While these devices initially captured my interest, my enthusiasm diminished significantly.
From Flip to Fold

- Used Galaxy Z Flip 3 for two years
- Tested Galaxy Z Flip 5 for four months
- Purchased Galaxy Z Fold 5 in early 2024
The Galaxy Z Fold 5 initially felt like a productivity upgrade. Its multitasking capabilities and tablet mode were impressive. However, over time, I found myself reaching for my secondary smartphone for lighter use. By late 2024, the Fold 5 had been relegated to a secondary status as a home device.
Reasons for Moving On
By the end of 2025, I sold my Galaxy Z Fold 5. While the innovation was appealing, practicality ultimately drove my decision. I was no longer captivated by the novelty of foldables.
Durability Concerns
Throughout my time with the Flip series, I encountered several durability issues. The devices developed significant hinge problems over time. These incidents made me reconsider the feasibility of incorporating foldables into my everyday life.

Looking Ahead
Though my affection for foldables has waned, I remain open to future innovations. As manufacturers address durability issues, I might consider returning to this technology. However, until foldables become more practical, I will continue to rely on traditional smartphones.
