Elder Scrolls Online’s Smaller Seasons Not Linked to Microsoft Layoffs

Zenimax Online Studios, the developer behind Elder Scrolls Online (ESO), has clarified that its transition to smaller seasonal expansions is not a response to recent layoffs at Microsoft. The studio revealed a new direction for ESO, introducing “Seasons” as a way for players to engage in new adventures and earn rewards.

Clarification on Development Changes

When questioned by RockPaperShotgun about the motivation behind this shift, executive producer Susan Kath emphasized that the change was not a reaction to team reductions. “We kicked off the Season work at least 12 to 14 months ago,” Kath stated, indicating that plans for this transition were in place long before the layoffs.

Team Adjustments and Project Focus

  • The adjustments made within the team facilitated a dedicated focus on The Elder Scrolls Online.
  • Kath noted that previously, some staff were balancing responsibilities across multiple projects.
  • Now, these team members are fully engaged with ESO, allowing for increased productivity.

Nick Giacomini from ZeniMax acknowledged the emotional impact of the layoffs on the team. He conveyed a sense of resilience among staff, stating, “We’re excited about the future. We’re excited that we’re making all these big changes.”

Impact of Microsoft Layoffs

The repercussions of Microsoft’s recent layoffs, which affected over 9,000 employees, reached ZeniMax Online Studios. The closure of Project Blackbird, a highly anticipated MMO, contributed to a significant shift in the studio’s direction. Following the cancellation, studio president Matt Firor left the company, expressing disappointment over the halt of a project he had long dreamed of creating.

Moving Forward

ZeniMax Online Studios is now focused on its new seasonal model for Elder Scrolls Online. The studio assured fans that the changes are designed to enhance gameplay. By dedicating resources solely to ESO, they aim to provide players with fresh, engaging content.
