Sony Unveils Square, High-Speed Global Shutter Image Sensors
Sony Semiconductor Solutions has introduced two new square global shutter image sensors, the IMX928 and IMX929, extending its high-performance lineup that began with the IMX927. These sensors showcase remarkable speed and versatility, addressing various industrial applications.
Sony’s High-Speed Global Shutter Image Sensors
Building on the advanced capabilities of the 105-megapixel IMX927, the IMX928 offers a resolution of 68.16 megapixels and dimensions of 22.5 by 22.5 millimeters. This size makes it nearly equivalent in height to a full-frame sensor but narrower, allowing for diverse application possibilities.
The IMX929, meanwhile, has a slightly smaller resolution of 50.79 megapixels and measures about 19.9 by 19.9 millimeters. It is taller than a standard APS-C image sensor, typically measuring around 16 by 24 millimeters.
Incredible Speed and Efficiency
The IMX927 achieves impressive performance by capturing 12-bit images at a rate of 73 frames per second. The new IMX928 and IMX929 sensors push these capabilities even further, reaching speeds of 90 and 136 frames per second, respectively.
According to Sony, these advancements stem from modifications in the sensor’s pixel reading and A/D converter, which enhance data output efficiency. This technological leap is expected to improve productivity across various sectors, particularly in industrial equipment operations, such as:
- Factory automation imaging
- 3D inspection
- Flaw inspection
- Electronics and semiconductor manufacturing
Smart Design Features
The IMX927 series incorporates a newly developed ceramic package featuring standardized connectors that ensure pin compatibility across all 16 products. This design improves camera assembly operations significantly compared to traditional surface-mount-device (SMD) technology.
Additionally, the detachable nature of these sensors allows for easy replacement tailored to specific requirements, making them highly adaptable for manufacturers.
Sony’s expertise in industrial sensor technology often translates into consumer products, potentially enhancing the performance of devices like the Sony Alpha camera series in future iterations.
