Mario Cristobal Opts for Football, Leads Miami to CFP Berth

Mario Cristobal’s journey to coaching has recently culminated in leading the University of Miami to the College Football Playoff (CFP) title game. This path, however, was almost diverted during his early career when he considered a future in law enforcement.

Mario Cristobal’s Early Decision

In 1998, while serving as a Graduate Assistant (GA) at Miami, Cristobal was also pursuing a position with the U.S. Secret Service. This decision was influenced by his family’s longstanding tradition in law enforcement.

A Change of Heart

As he neared the completion of his requirements for federal service, Cristobal received an important notification from the Secret Service. On the verge of leaving Miami football behind, he had to make a pivotal choice.

“I woke up in a panic. I love football. I’ve always loved football,” Cristobal recalled. This realization prompted him to reconsider his decision to enter federal service.

After initially saying his goodbyes to his colleagues and friends in the football program, Cristobal decided that his passion for coaching would take precedence. He credits this decision to a moment of introspection during his time in a small apartment.

Leadership Role at Miami

With his heart set on football, Cristobal quickly returned to his GA position. He expressed gratitude to coach Larry Coker for supporting his decision to stay within the program.

Now, after flourishing in various coaching roles—including head coach positions at FIU and Oregon—Cristobal stands ready to lead Miami into the CFP title game. His journey demonstrates the profound impact of pivotal life choices in shaping one’s career.
