Microsoft Unveils Solution for January’s Flawed Security Update

Microsoft has addressed problems stemming from January 2026’s security updates. These updates caused significant issues related to authentication and power management for users across various Windows systems.

Details of Microsoft’s Security Update Flaws

The flawed updates affected several Windows versions, including:

  • Windows 10
  • Windows 11 23H2
  • Windows 11 24H2
  • Windows 11 25H2
  • Windows Server 2019
  • Windows Server 2022
  • Windows Server 2025

Specifically, Windows 11 version 23H2 was most severely impacted. Users encountered problems with Remote Desktop connections, leading to sign-in failures. Additionally, devices unexpectedly restarted instead of correctly shutting down or entering hibernation.

Possible Causes of the Shutdown Issues

The shutdown problems were particularly prevalent on systems with System Guard Secure Launch enabled. This hardware-based feature was introduced in Windows 10 version 1809 to enhance system integrity and security.

Fixes and Patch Availability

Microsoft has not provided details on whether the flaws differently affect Professional and Home versions of Windows. Currently, users must manually download and install the patches, as these fixes have not yet been added to the usual Windows Update channel.

The upcoming regular Patch Tuesday is scheduled for February 10 at 10 AM US Pacific Time (5 AM AEDT). Microsoft intends to include these bug fixes in this monthly security update.
