Kenyan Government Addresses AFCON Hosting Rights Concerns
The Kenyan government has addressed concerns regarding its ability to co-host the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Uganda and Tanzania. These concerns emerged due to complaints about inadequate infrastructure in the region.
Infrastructure Readiness for AFCON 2027
During a recent benchmarking visit in Morocco, Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi affirmed that Kenya is capably prepared for the tournament. He emphasized that the nation possesses both the necessary infrastructure and resources to successfully host the event. In his remarks, he referenced Kenya’s successful co-hosting of the African Nations Championships (CHAN) in 2025.
A Commitment to Improvement
Mwangi stated, “We have the capacity and what it takes, both infrastructure-wise and the amenities within the countries.” He acknowledged valuable lessons learned during CHAN, asserting that this upcoming opportunity would exceed previous efforts. The Sports Principal Secretary confirmed government support, which includes dedication to completing the Talanta Sports City Stadium, expected to host key ceremonies during AFCON 2027.
AFCON 2027: An East African Milestone
Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania were officially designated hosts of the 2027 AFCON tournament, an announcement signaled by the presentation of the AFCON flag. This marks a historic moment, as it will be the first time the tournament is jointly hosted by these nations and the first in East Africa in nearly five decades.
- Previous Host: Ethiopia, 1976
- Expected Date: June to July 2027
Community and CAF Support
Despite recent criticisms regarding infrastructure capabilities from an Ivorian journalist, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe reaffirmed CAF’s commitment to developing football across the continent. Motsepe stressed that limiting hosting rights to more developed nations would be counterproductive for African football.
This collective hosting provides an exceptional chance for East African nations to showcase their potential to the continent and the world.
Conclusion
As the 2027 AFCON approaches, Kenya prepares vigorously to ensure a successful tournament. With government commitment and regional collaboration, the three nations are gearing up for an event that promises to be a historic celebration of African football.
