AFL Star Reveals Near-Death Experience from Life-Threatening Illness on Holiday
North Melbourne forward Paul Curtis has shared a harrowing experience involving a near-death incident caused by a life-threatening illness during his holiday. The 22-year-old athlete traveled to the UK with teammates in late December for an off-season getaway. However, his trip took a drastic turn as he began suffering from symptoms resembling the flu, which escalated into a severe condition.
A Life-Threatening Illness
Realizing the seriousness of his situation, Curtis sought medical attention at a hospital in London. Unfortunately, he faced significant delays, waiting eight hours to be seen. Once he was finally attended to, he received only temporary relief in the form of stronger medications.
Emergency Situation
- Hospitalization recommended but insufficient treatment provided.
- Cleared to board a flight to Bali despite ongoing health issues.
According to Dr. Clay Golledge, an expert in infectious diseases, the decision to allow Curtis to travel was alarmingly reckless. On his flight from the UK to Indonesia, Curtis experienced an allergic reaction to the antibiotics prescribed, leading to further complications.
Health Complications in Bali
Upon arriving in Bali, Curtis was hospitalized, where he was diagnosed with an empyema—a collection of infected fluid around the lungs that poses serious health risks. He described his condition: “I just swelled up; my face just puffed up. I had a rash all over my body.”
Emergency Surgery in Perth
- Unable to improve after treatment with antibiotics in Bali.
- Urgently evacuated to Perth for emergency surgery.
In Perth, medical professionals discovered almost a liter of pus had accumulated in Curtis’ lung. As a result, he underwent significant surgery and spent eight days recovering in a Western Australian hospital. After three months of recovery, he is now on the mend and is hopeful to play in North Melbourne’s Round 1 match against Port Adelaide.
Reflection and Gratitude
This experience has imparted valuable lessons on vulnerability and perspective. Curtis expressed his appreciation for the support he received during this ordeal, emphasizing, “It’s given me a good perspective on life and how quickly things can change.”
As Curtis prepares to return to the field, he reflects on his career-best season, where he scored 38 goals in 19 games and established himself as a formidable pressure forward for the Kangaroos.
