Greenland Street Turmoil Escalates with Troops’ Arrival
The arrival of foreign troops in Greenland has escalated tensions amid growing local protests. Thousands of residents have taken to the streets, voicing strong opposition to any perceived threats to their autonomy. This unrest coincides with Donald Trump’s mounting pressure for the United States to gain control of the island.
Foreign Troops Arrive in Greenland
Recent footage has shown an influx of European troops arriving in Greenland. Notably, German soldiers were seen disembarking from an Air Greenland plane as part of a larger military operation. The composition of the forces so far includes:
- 15 from France
- 13 from Germany
- 2 from Norway
- 2 from Finland
- 1 from Great Britain
- 1 from the Netherlands
- 1 from Belgium
Operation Arctic Endurance
These troops are participating in a Danish-led exercise named Operation Arctic Endurance. The exercise aims to reinforce NATO’s commitment to Arctic defense, particularly in light of potential threats from Russia. Notably, the US was invited to join the undertaking.
Local Protests Against US Annexation
On the same day as the troop arrivals, a large number of Greenlanders marched through Nuuk, the capital city. Protesters carried banners stating “Greenland is not for sale” and “we shape our future.” Among the demonstrators was Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen.
Polls indicate that approximately 85% of the Greenlandic population opposes the idea of US annexation. This resistance has intensified in the wake of Trump’s actions, which have included imposing tariffs on eight European countries supportive of Greenland’s independence.
Tariffs Imposed by Trump
Trump announced a 10% tariff on exports from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland, effective February 1. This tariff is set to increase to 25% on June 1. In a statement, Trump declared that the tariffs would remain in place until a deal is reached regarding the purchase of Greenland.
Statements on World Peace
In a lengthy post on Truth Social, Trump expressed concern about international interests in Greenland, claiming both China and Russia want territory control. He emphasized the strategic importance of Greenland for the US, citing the Golden Dome missile defense system’s operational efficiency.
Trump’s remarks and the military presence have raised significant concerns among local residents who are determined to safeguard their future.
