Oilers Celebrate Nugent-Hopkins’ Milestone 1,000th NHL Game

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, the longest-serving player for the Edmonton Oilers, is set to achieve a significant milestone: his 1,000th NHL game. The Oilers will honor Nugent-Hopkins during a pre-game ceremony on January 18 at Rogers Place, when they host the St. Louis Blues.

Nugent-Hopkins’ Remarkable Career Milestone

At 32 years old, Nugent-Hopkins is entering his 15th season in the NHL. This landmark game will make him the first player in Oilers history to play all 1,000 of his games with the franchise. Additionally, he will become the 417th player in league history to reach this milestone.

Career Highlights

  • Selected first overall by the Oilers in the 2011 NHL Draft.
  • Scored 282 goals and 503 assists, totaling 785 points in 998 games as of January 2024.
  • Notable for his two-way play, contributing on power plays and penalties.
  • Scored his first NHL goal in his debut game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on October 9, 2011.
  • Had an impressive rookie season with 52 points in 62 games, finishing second for the Calder Memorial Trophy.

During the 2022-23 NHL season, Nugent-Hopkins reached another milestone, becoming only the sixth player in NHL history to record a 100-point season in his 12th season or later. This achievement placed him in elite company, alongside Steven Stamkos, who also accomplished this feat in the past 50 years.

Contributions to the Oilers

Nugent-Hopkins has consistently been a key player for the Oilers, particularly noted for his performance in the 2025 Western Conference Final. He became the first Oilers player since Wayne Gretzky to score nine points in the first four games of a conference final series.

Beyond his stats, Nugent-Hopkins is recognized for his contributions to community advocacy. He received the King Charles III Coronation Medal in 2025 for his work in promoting cystic fibrosis awareness and treatment, a cause he supports alongside his wife, Breanne. He was also nominated for the NHL’s King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 2018 for his humanitarian efforts.
