Aaron Rodgers Unlikely to Renew Steelers Contract
Mike Tomlin’s recent resignation as the Steelers’ head coach marks the end of a significant 19-year tenure with the franchise. This unexpected development raises questions about Aaron Rodgers’ future, as he was Tomlin’s last quarterback in Pittsburgh.
Aaron Rodgers’ Future with the Steelers
With Tomlin’s departure, it is likely that Aaron Rodgers has made his last appearance for the Steelers. NFL analyst Ian Rapoport indicated that this change would have a significant influence on Rodgers’ decision regarding his playing career in Pittsburgh. Steelers owner Art Rooney II noted, “Aaron came here to play for Mike, so I think it’ll most likely affect his decision.”
Rodgers’ Career in Pittsburgh
Rodgers joined the Steelers on a one-year, $13.65 million contract after a brief flirtation with the Minnesota Vikings in free agency last offseason. During their only year together, Rodgers and Tomlin built a solid rapport, finishing the season with a 10-7 record. This success contributed to Tomlin securing his eighth AFC North title and the franchise’s 13th playoff berth.
Rodgers, who is now 42 years old, hinted before the season that it could be his last. However, he left the door open for a potential return in 2026 later in December. A report suggested there was mutual interest in him staying with the Steelers; however, this was prior to a disappointing 30-6 playoff loss against the Texans that ultimately led to Tomlin’s resignation the next day.
Rodgers’ Impressive Performance
If this season marks the end of Rodgers’ time in Pittsburgh, it will conclude on a high note. Despite a lackluster offensive supporting cast, Rodgers achieved the following in 16 games:
- Completed 65.7% of his passes
- Passed for 3,322 yards
- Tossed 24 touchdowns
- Registered 7 interceptions
- Achieved a passer rating of 94.8
His performance may attract interest from other teams looking for a short-term solution this offseason.
Steelers’ Quarterback Dilemma
With Rodgers likely moving on, the Steelers face uncertainty at the quarterback position. Currently, Mason Rudolph is under contract for another year, although he is expected to remain as a backup. Will Howard, a sixth-round pick who has yet to throw a pass, is also a potential option within the team.
The Steelers may explore free agency, the trade market, or the draft to find a suitable starter. As Pittsburgh heads into a new era, they will also begin the search for a new head coach for the first time since 2007.
