Tarragona Diputació Secures 75-Year Lease for Music Conservatory at Tabacalera

Tarragona’s Diputació and the local city council have finalized an agreement for a 75-year lease of space in the former Tabacalera tobacco factory. This agreement will house the new music conservatory, allowing the Diputació to commence preliminary studies for the project’s licensing, anticipated for over a year.

Tarragona’s Music Conservatory Expansion

The space allocated by the Tarragona city council spans 7,168 square meters, including both the building and exterior areas. A preliminary assessment by the Diputació indicates that this site will adequately meet the current needs of the music conservatory, which currently serves 445 students.

Infrastructure and Accessibility

  • The city council will establish an independent access point from public roads.
  • Essential services such as water supply, electrical connections, and communications infrastructure will be provided.
  • Enhancements will also include public access to the garden area before the conservatory’s relocation.

This agreement was announced during a visit by Noemí Llauradó, president of the Diputació de Tarragona, and Rubén Viñuales, mayor of Tarragona. Llauradó emphasized the location’s suitability for the Escola i Conservatori de Música, a center with a storied 70-year history.

Cultural and Educational Significance

The central location of the Tabacalera is expected to improve accessibility for students coming from outside the city. The agreement aligns with the Diputació’s broader plan to reorganize and relocate certain facilities to enhance sustainability and efficiency.

Mayor Viñuales described the deal as a “strong commitment to culture, education, and urban revitalization.” He noted that relocating the conservatory will provide a fitting environment for both students and faculty, aiding in the Tabacalera’s transformation into a major cultural and educational hub after years of inactivity.

Future Developments

The city council will soon vote on the definitive agreement to finalize the lease. Meanwhile, the Diputació will develop the project for construction after completing the required preliminary studies, within a year.
