Jordan’s private jet landed at Juan Santamaría International Airport at approximately 8 a.m. on January 14, 2023. Following immigration checks, he headed directly to the Pacific coast, specifically Marina Pez Vela in Quepos, to participate in the tournament.

The Pelagic Rockstar Offshore Tournament runs from January 15 to January 18, attracting elite anglers from around the globe. The tournament schedule includes:

  • January 15: Team registration

Participants will target various species, including sailfish, marlin, tuna, and dorado, with strict catch-and-release rules for billfish. This aligns with Costa Rica’s commitment to marine conservation.

Tournament Milestone and Participation

This year marks the tournament’s decade milestone, building on the success of the previous year, which featured 58 teams and a prize pool of $1 million. Jordan, a six-time NBA champion and passionate angler, will compete using his custom yacht, Catch 23.

Last year’s tournament saw Jordan’s team achieve several releases of blue marlin and sailfish on the first day, showcasing his skills and dedication to the sport.

Jordan’s Influence on Costa Rica’s Fishing Economy

Michael Jordan’s frequent visits have significantly impacted the local economy during the dry season. Hotels, restaurants, and charter services in Quepos experience an uptick in business as participants and spectators flock to the area.

The Pelagic Rockstar event is marketed as a key event for highlighting Costa Rica as a premier sportfishing destination while emphasizing the protection of ocean resources. Jordan’s involvement further boosts the tournament’s profile, drawing international attention to the Central Pacific coast.

Looking Ahead

As the tournament begins, the fishing community is energized by Jordan’s presence. While specifics about his plans remain undisclosed, all eyes are set on the waters off Quepos. Competitors will vie for the Grand Champion title, fostering excitement within the sportfishing community.
