USAF C-5 Transports New F-7 Jets from Beijing to Tonopah Test Range
The USAF has recently expanded its capabilities by transporting advanced Chengdu F-7 jets from Beijing to the Tonopah Test Range (TTR). This operation, part of the secretive Constant Peg project, aims to enhance the US military’s training and preparedness against potential aerial threats.
Transport of F-7 Jets to Tonopah Test Range
The operation began when a C-5A aircraft approached Chinese airspace in November 1982. The crew, which included enlisted members from the USAF’s 4477th Test and Evaluation Squadron, was tasked with retrieving several aircraft from a facility in China.

As the C-5A neared its destination, the flight crew informed the team onboard to prepare for incoming People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) fighters. This precaution highlighted the sensitive nature of the moment, as foreign military aircraft usually prompted heightened vigilance.
Arrival in Beijing
The C-5A landed at Beijing Capital International Airport, where the American team transformed into civilian attire to maintain operational security. They were met by Chinese personnel, who assisted them in loading the aircraft.

Upon inspection, the team discovered the unmarked fuselages and wings of newly manufactured F-7Bs from the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group, rather than the anticipated MiG-21s.
Constant Peg Project Enhancements
This acquisition marked a critical enhancement to the Constant Peg project. Over the next 18 months, the team would return to Beijing two more times to complete the acquisition of nine F-7 fighters, which aimed to bolster US aircrew training against Soviet aircraft designs.
Return to Tonopah Test Range
Following the loading of the F-7s, the C-5A departed China under the cover of darkness. The strategic flight included layovers at Clark Air Base and Hickam Air Force Base before returning to the Tonopah Test Range.
