iPhone Fold, 18 Pro to Launch with Powerful A20 Pro Chip

Apple’s highly anticipated foldable iPhone will debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max this September. According to industry analyst Jeff Pu, all three devices will be equipped with the next-generation A20 Pro chip.

Features of the New iPhones

The iPhone Fold and iPhone 18 Pro models will harness TSMC’s advanced 2nm N2 technology, delivering significant performance enhancements. These upgrades may offer up to 15 percent more speed and improve energy efficiency by 30 percent compared to the previous A19 chip.

Advanced Chip Packaging Technology

The A20 Pro chip will utilize TSMC’s Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module (WMCM) technology. This integration allows the RAM to be placed directly onto the same wafer as the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine, improving performance and efficiency.

  • Faster performance for Apple Intelligence applications
  • Extended battery life
  • Reduced chip size for additional internal space

Additionally, the N2 process introduces super-high-performance metal-insulator-metal (SHPMIM) capacitors, which enhance power delivery and stability. These innovations increase capacitance density and lower resistance, ensuring better overall performance.

Expected Specifications

According to Pu’s projections, the iPhone Fold and iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to feature:

  • 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM
  • 48-megapixel rear cameras
  • Apple’s C2 modem

The foldable iPhone is designed in a wide, book-style format. It is said to have a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch outer display, both featuring a crease-free screen. Other anticipated features include Touch ID and a front-facing camera operational in both folded and unfolded positions.

Dimensions

The device is expected to measure approximately 4.5mm in thickness when opened and between 9mm to 9.5mm when closed. The iPhone 18 and 18e models, however, are projected to launch in the spring of 2027 as part of Apple’s new split-launch strategy.
