UGDSB Launches New Day School for Youth Battling Addictions
Guelph is set to welcome a new educational initiative aimed at helping youth fighting substance use issues. The newly established alternative day school will be located at the Grove Hub on Woolwich Street. Scheduled to open in the coming weeks, this program is designed for Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) students in Grades 8 to 12 grappling with addiction and mental health challenges.
New Day School’s Purpose and Partnership
The alternative day school is a collaborative effort between the UGDSB and the Canadian Mental Health Association Waterloo Wellington. Its primary objective is to create a safe, inclusive learning environment where students can cultivate the skills needed to transition back to mainstream schooling.
- Students will receive academic support alongside mental health resources.
- Professionals will assist students in overcoming barriers to education.
- The program focuses on helping students earn school credits.
Background and Development
April King, a UGDSB administrator, announced the opening of the new school during a special education advisory committee meeting on December 10. The initiative was partly influenced by the closure of Portage, a residential youth addiction rehabilitation center in Elora, which previously had five full-time UGDSB educators.
Support Services Offered
At the Grove site, a combination of therapeutic and academic support will be provided. The program aims to assist students in gradually reintegrating into their home schools.
- Initial attendance may be limited to one hour at a time.
- Students will build social skills and receive therapeutic support before engaging in full classes.
- A hybrid learning model will be implemented as students progress.
Accessibility Across Regions
King highlighted the importance of accessibility for all youth in the region, including those in Wellington County. The board is exploring remote learning options, enabling students in Palmerston to connect virtually with the Grove Hub in Guelph.
