Consumers Energy Foundation Awards $100,000 Grant to EightCAP

The Consumers Energy Foundation has granted $100,000 to EightCAP, a nonprofit organization devoted to fighting homelessness. This donation was celebrated with a check presentation and volunteer event at EightCAP’s Administrative Building in Orleans.

About the Grant

The grant is part of the Consumers Energy Foundation’s People Award. Its purpose is to support EightCAP’s Household Goods for Rehousing Success initiative. This program provides “Fresh Start Kits” to families and individuals transitioning out of homelessness.

Targeted Communities

  • Gratiot County
  • Ionia County
  • Isabella County
  • Montcalm County

These kits are crucial for helping new residents create stable and dignified homes as they move into permanent housing.

Check Presentation and Volunteer Efforts

The event featured Lori Johnson, President of EightCAP, who accepted the grant. Cathy Wilson, Secretary and Treasurer of the Consumers Energy Foundation, along with Rebecca O’Connell, Community Affairs Manager, were also present.

Following the presentation, volunteers from Consumers Energy assembled approximately 36 Fresh Start Kits. These kits include essential household items that assist families in settling into new homes. Volunteers included representatives from Volunteers in Action, a local organization that has previously collaborated with EightCAP.

Impact of the Initiative

Since November 2025, EightCAP has provided around 81 Fresh Start Kits to 25 families and individuals. This distribution ensures that they have the basic necessities needed to maintain stability in their new environments.

Lori Johnson expressed gratitude for the grant, highlighting its significance. “This generous support from the Consumers Energy Foundation ensures that families aren’t starting from nothing. These Fresh Start Kits help restore dignity and make a house feel like home,” she remarked.

Commitment to Community Support

Cathy Wilson emphasized the foundation’s belief in the power of community support. “Partnering with EightCAP reflects our shared commitment to helping families in Mid-Michigan find housing and create homes where they can thrive,” she explained.

The Consumers Energy Foundation, as the charitable arm of Michigan’s largest energy provider, focuses on initiatives that bolster communities and encourage economic growth. EightCAP’s mission aligns with this vision by tackling poverty and aiding individuals in attaining long-term self-sufficiency.
