Amazon’s New World Shuts Down in 12 Months—Unless Rust COO Intervenes
Amazon Games has officially announced the closure of New World, its MMORPG launched in 2021. The game will shut down on January 31, 2027. This decision follows significant layoffs within the development team late last year. The developer previously indicated that the game’s 10th season, titled ‘Nighthaven,’ would be its final season. However, this season will now extend until the servers are permanently closed.
The game is no longer available for purchase on any storefronts. Currently, only players who have purchased New World can continue to access it until its shutdown.
Farewell Message from the New World Team
The remaining team members at Amazon Games expressed their gratitude to the players. They stated, “We want to thank the players for your dedication and passion. We are grateful for the time spent crafting the world of Aeternum with you. Together we built something special.” They added that while it is sad to say goodbye, they cherish the shared experiences within the game.
Hope for New World’s Future
In light of the shutdown announcement, Alistair McFarlane, COO of Facepunch Studios, known for the successful game Rust, has made a bold move. He tweeted an offer of £25 million for New World, stating, “Games should never die.” His proposal hints at a potential revival of the MMORPG.
Simon Collins-Laflamme from Hypixel Games also weighed in, offering to share insights on acquiring canceled games. Collins-Laflamme had recently purchased Hytale from Riot Games and saw it enjoy immediate success upon release.
