Jay Leno Stands by Wife Amid Dementia Diagnosis, Surprising Many

Jay Leno has recently opened up about his wife Mavis’s dementia diagnosis, revealing how it has affected their marriage and public perception. During an interview with Maria Shriver, Leno, age 75, shared his insights on commitment and caregiving.

Supportive Commitment Amid Dementia Diagnosis

Leno discussed the reactions he received regarding his dedication to Mavis, who is 79 years old. “I’ve taken a vow, and people are stunned to see me live up to it,” he explained. He highlighted a particularly surprising reaction, where someone inquired whether he would seek a girlfriend now that his wife is facing health challenges. Leno firmly stated, “I have a girlfriend. I’m married. Married for 45 years,” emphasizing his devotion.

Details of the Diagnosis

Mavis’s condition became public in January 2024 when Leno filed for conservatorship to manage her estate. According to the petition, Mavis had been “progressively losing capacity and orientation to space and time for several years.” In April 2024, Los Angeles County Superior Court deemed Leno “suitable and qualified” to fulfill the role of conservator.

Life Together Post-Diagnosis

In his interview, Leno expressed that he finds joy in caring for his wife, stating, “I enjoy going home as soon as I can.” He highlighted making her laugh as one of his primary goals. “Making my wife laugh is still very important to me,” he noted.
