A Year on Linux Erased My Longing for Windows

In January 2025, a decisive moment marked a shift in my computing journey. I opted to erase my Windows 10 operating system and install Ubuntu. This choice stemmed from my growing dissatisfaction with Windows and a curiosity about Linux. One year later, I find myself pleased with this decision, even resurrecting an old Windows laptop by installing Linux.

A Year on Linux: A Transformative Experience

Initially, my transition to Linux had its challenges, particularly on my first night. Setting up applications was daunting, especially for someone unfamiliar with the command line. The Linux terminal, a critical part of system management, was an adjustment after years of using Windows.

Overcoming Early Obstacles

On that challenging night, I struggled with connecting a second SSD and nearly gave up. However, I returned the next morning to discover that I had simply neglected to update my file systems table, or “fstab.” This minor correction sparked my appreciation for Linux.

Building Troubleshooting Skills

Throughout the year, I learned that Linux isn’t particularly complicated for daily tasks. However, successful navigation requires a willingness to troubleshoot independently. Researching solutions on forums like Reddit and Stack Overflow became routine, enhancing my confidence in problem-solving.

Advantages of Using Linux

• Customization: Linux allows for significant personalization. I have switched between various desktop environments, including KDE Plasma and Cinnamon. My current setup showcases a serene Nordic blue backdrop, along with custom icon packs.
• Control: Unlike Windows, Linux provides complete freedom over software installations and system modifications. Popular applications like LibreOffice and RawTherapee have replaced traditional Windows software, meeting my professional and personal needs.
• Gaming Performance: My gaming experience has also improved. Most games in my Steam library run seamlessly through Valve’s Proton layer, ensuring smooth gameplay.

Challenges and Limitations

While my experience using Linux has been positive, I recognize the trade-offs involved. Certain competitive multiplayer games that rely on anti-cheat systems are not compatible with Linux. Additionally, individuals who prefer graphical user interfaces over command-line installations may find Linux daunting.
