Police Discover 11 Explosive Devices on Canberra Streets

Authorities in Canberra have uncovered 11 explosive devices over a span of two days. The devices were found near footpaths in Belconnen, a suburb located in the city’s north-west region. Most of the explosive devices were located around Lake Ginninderra, specifically between Joynton Smith Drive and Ginninderra Drive.

Details of the Discovery

On Wednesday, local police issued an alert following the discovery of several pipe bombs in public spaces. The ACT Policing has confirmed that these devices are potentially hazardous. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries related to their presence.

Public Safety Measures

Detective Acting Inspector Anna Wronski from ACT Policing urged the public to be cautious. Residents finding a suspicious item should refrain from touching it and report it immediately by calling Triple Zero (000).

  • Do not approach or touch suspicious devices.
  • Report any findings to police via Triple Zero.
  • No injuries have been reported thus far.

Ongoing Investigations

Although some of the explosive devices had detonated before police arrived, the investigation continues. Inspector Wronski indicated that sniffer dogs have been deployed in the area to assist in the search. She emphasized the importance of public cooperation and safety.

Device Characteristics

Images released by police depict the explosive devices as silver, pipe-shaped objects with screw tops. They are small enough to fit in a person’s hand. The police stated that there are no indications of these devices being present in other areas of Canberra.

The situation is being taken seriously, and authorities are committed to ensuring public safety. While there is currently no evidence linking the devices to an act of terrorism, the ongoing investigation aims to determine how these hazardous materials were left in public spaces.
