Prepare for Earthquakes: Top Four Tips from Healthy Alameda
Alameda residents must be prepared for emergencies, including earthquakes, wildfires, and power outages. Experts emphasize the importance of having an emergency plan and kit. Pete Alimi, the environmental health and safety manager at Alameda Health System (AHS), shares essential tips for ensuring safety during crises.
Top Four Tips for Earthquake Preparedness
- Water Supply: Store at least one gallon of water per person per day. A minimum three-day supply is crucial for emergencies when public water systems may fail.
- Non-Perishable Food: Keep a three-day emergency food supply on hand. If you plan to stay home, aim for up to two weeks’ worth of food.
- First-Aid Supplies: Ensure your first-aid kit is well-stocked and up-to-date. Include items like flashlights, radios, blankets, and extra dry clothing.
- Communication Plan: Develop a meeting plan with family members in case phone services are disrupted.
Alimi also encourages residents to refer to the complete American Red Cross earthquake kit checklist for further preparation details.
Ongoing Infrastructure Improvements
Alameda Hospital plays a vital role in community safety. AHS is collaborating with the City of Alameda Health Care District to implement seismic updates to the hospital building. These updates will enhance the facility’s ability to operate after significant earthquakes. Work has already commenced with planning and project coordination in full swing.
Emergency Preparedness in Healthcare
In addition to earthquake readiness, AHS focuses on preparing for other emergencies like power outages and infectious disease outbreaks. Alimi’s team regularly conducts drills to ensure a prompt response during critical situations. They have improved communication methods to facilitate efficient collaboration during disasters.
“Communication is the most important factor in disasters,” Alimi noted. His commitment to preparedness aims to ensure the community receives continuous care, regardless of the crisis.
AHS remains dedicated to its mission of caring, healing, teaching, and serving all members of the Alameda community. This dedication includes ongoing efforts to equip the hospital and staff for any emergency that may arise.
