John Preyer, Crucial in Belichick’s Carolina Move, Steps Down from UNC Board

John Preyer, an influential member of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Board of Trustees, has officially stepped down from his position. Preyer’s resignation was communicated via email on Friday, and he expressed pride in his contributions to the university.

Impact on UNC and Coaching Search

Preyer previously served as the chairman of the board. He played a crucial role in the search for the Tar Heels’ next football coach following the dismissal of Mack Brown in December 2024. His leadership was essential during this transition period.

Connection to Bill Belichick

  • Preyer was instrumental in connecting with Bill Belichick’s confidant, Michael Lombardi.
  • This connection followed extensive discussions with state political leaders.
  • Belichick, renowned for his six Super Bowl victories with the New England Patriots, began coaching UNC during a challenging season.

Belichick’s first year at UNC was marked by a disappointing 4-8 record, which subsequently led to reduced fan attendance. Nonetheless, Chancellor Lee Roberts supported him throughout the difficulties of the 2025 season. Preyer remained optimistic, believing that a coach of Belichick’s caliber would ultimately succeed at the college level.

Reflection on Tenure

In a recent interview regarding a documentary titled “Coaching Carolina: The Belichick Way,” Preyer reflected on the university’s ambitions and achievements during his time on the board. He emphasized the importance of leadership and vision in transforming UNC into a top-tier institution.

Leadership and Legacy

Trustee Marty Kotis praised Preyer’s contribution to the board, noting his role in addressing a $100 million structural deficit. Kotis highlighted his commitment to advancing various initiatives that would influence the university’s future positively.

At a board meeting in July, Trustee Jim Blaine commended Preyer’s innovative approach in the search for the new football coach, attributing the eventual hiring of Belichick to his leadership.

Background of John Preyer

John Preyer co-founded Restoration Systems, an environmental mitigation company in Raleigh, in 1998. His previous roles included serving as legislative director for U.S. Senator Lauch Faircloth and involvement in the 1996 presidential campaign for Steve Forbes. A 1990 graduate of UNC, Preyer has been a part of various university boards and committees since 2012, joining the Board of Trustees in 2019, with his term set to conclude in 2027.
