Maldives Scuba Incident Claims Lives of Pensioners
A tragic scuba-diving incident in the Maldives has claimed the lives of a retired British couple. Malcolm and Elaine Richmond were frequent visitors to their beloved resort, having made over 60 trips to the Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon resort in North Ari Atoll.
Incident Details
The couple, both experienced divers, were holidaying at the resort during the Christmas season. Elaine Richmond, aged 70, lost her life on December 19. Her husband, Malcolm, aged 71, passed away three days later while receiving treatment in the hospital.
Maldives Diving Experience
The Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon resort features one of the Maldives’ five Dive & Sail dive centers. The Richmonds had been loyal guests, spending the last 17 Christmases at this picturesque location.
Upcoming Inquest and Funeral
Maldivian authorities have not released an official statement regarding the cause of death. An inquest is set to begin on January 30 at Chesterfield Coroner’s Court. The couple’s joint funeral is scheduled for January 29.

The couple was looking forward to celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in 2026. Their commitment to each other and their shared love for diving will be remembered by family and friends.
