Steelers Seek to Interview Dolphins DC Anthony Weaver for Head Coach

The Pittsburgh Steelers are actively seeking to interview Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver for their vacant head coach position. This development was reported by Dianna Russini from The Athletic via X. Weaver is the third known candidate on the Steelers’ radar, following Rams assistant coaches Nate Scheelhaase and Chris Shula.

Anthony Weaver’s Coaching Journey

At 45 years old, Anthony Weaver brings substantial experience to the table. He played as a defensive end for the Baltimore Ravens from 2002 to 2005 after being drafted in the second round in 2002. Weaver later had a brief tenure with the Houston Texans before transitioning into coaching. His career started as a graduate assistant at the University of Florida and progressed through various roles:

  • Linebackers Coach at North Texas
  • Assistant Defensive Line Coach with the New York Jets
  • Defensive Coordinator for the Houston Texans (2020)
  • Defensive Line Coach and Run Game Coordinator for the Ravens (2021)
  • Assistant Head Coach with the Ravens (2022)
  • Defensive Coordinator for the Dolphins (2023-2025)

Dolphins’ Performance Under Weaver

Under Weaver’s guidance, the Dolphins emerged as a strong defensive unit in 2024, ranking as the No. 4 total defense, allowing an average of 314.3 yards per game. They also placed tenth in scoring defense, permitting 21.4 points per game. However, their performance took a downturn in 2025, landing them near the bottom in key defensive statistics.

Head coach Mike McDaniel’s criticism of the defense in 2025 raised eyebrows. He suggested that coordination issues contributed to the poor performance, saying, “You don’t give up that many line-of-scrimmage yards unless you’re uncoordinated in certain ways.” Yet, despite the struggles, McDaniel acknowledged Weaver’s planning and execution as “phenomenal” during a strong team performance against the Falcons.

Future Prospects for Anthony Weaver

Given the shift in leadership with a new general manager and the departure of Mike McDaniel, it appears likely that Weaver’s time with the Dolphins is coming to an end. Currently, he has received interview opportunities from multiple NFL teams, including:

  • Arizona Cardinals
  • Atlanta Falcons
  • Baltimore Ravens

As the Steelers look for their next head coach for the first time since 2007, they are exploring diverse candidates. The outcome of this search remains uncertain, with numerous names expected to surface in the upcoming days.
