Gmail Widget Revamped with Expressive Material 3 Tweaks
Google has made significant updates to the Gmail widget for Android, enhancing its design with Material 3 Expressive tweaks. The new features improve both aesthetics and usability.
Revamped Gmail Widget Features
The most notable change is the redesign of the floating action button (FAB) used for composing emails. This button has transitioned from a rounded square to a pill shape, aligning it with other refreshed Google Workspace widgets.
This update also optimizes space on the homescreen widget. The header has been reduced in size and now includes a Gmail icon next to the “Inbox” or any selected folder name, except in the narrowest view. Consequently, users gain an additional line of text at the bottom of the widget.
Improvements in Usability
- Padding on the left and right sides has been decreased.
- This adjustment allows for easier reading of subject lines and email content.
The updated Material 3 Expressive widget was introduced during the Gmail for Android release version 2025.12.01 last month. This modernization not only refreshes the Gmail experience but also aligns it with updates made to Google Calendar and Google Drive.
Future Updates
While several applications benefit from this update, Google has yet to implement similar changes for Google Keep. There remains an opportunity for a highly beneficial refresh for Google Tasks.
