Bob Ross Paintings Auctioned to Support US Public Television
Bob Ross, the iconic television painter, is back in the spotlight as Bonhams prepares to auction several of his beloved works. The auction aims to support public television, especially in light of significant funding cuts from the previous administration.
Impact of Funding Cuts on Public Television
In 2022, funding for public broadcasters was reduced by over $1 billion due to appropriations made by a Republican-controlled Congress. This reduction prompted a nationwide call for support from various initiatives, including the sale of Bob Ross’s paintings.
Auction Details and Previous Success
Last year, Bonhams announced the auction of 30 Bob Ross paintings, donated by Bob Ross Inc. The initial batch included three paintings that collectively sold for $662,000. Notably, Ross’s painting “Winter’s Peace” (1993) reached $318,000, setting a record at the time.
- “Cabin at Sunset” (1987) later broke this record by selling for over $1 million in a charity auction.
- This auction was organized by comedian John Oliver to benefit public broadcasting through the Public Media Bridge Fund initiative.
Upcoming Auction and Expected Prices
On January 27, three more Ross paintings will be featured in the “Americana: Crafting a Nation: Art, History & Legacy” auction at Bonhams in Massachusetts. The estimated total for these works is $155,000.
Featured Paintings and Their Estimates
| Painting Title | Completion Year | Estimated Price |
|---|---|---|
| Valley View | 1990 | $30,000 – $50,000 |
| Change of Seasons | 1990 | $40,000 – $60,000 |
| Babbling Brook | 1993 | $25,000 – $45,000 |
“Valley View” was the first piece completed for Ross’s 21st volume of “The Joy of Painting.” “Change of Seasons” was painted live during the series’ 20th season, during which Ross referred to the work as “just a beautiful little painting.” Lastly, the unique oval-shaped “Babbling Brook” was developed during the filming of the 30th season, where Ross encouraged viewers to use their imagination.
Future Auctions
Looking ahead, Bonhams plans to auction an additional 24 Ross works across locations in New York, Boston, and Los Angeles throughout the year. This ongoing sale not only keeps Ross’s legacy alive but also supports public television in a critical time.
