Mercedes S-Class Debuts with Enhanced Engines and Additional Awards
Mercedes-Benz is set to unveil its enhanced S-Class on January 29, 2026. This facelift represents the most comprehensive mid-cycle update in the model’s history, featuring approximately 2,700 brand-new or updated components. Notably, more than half of the vehicle has been reengineered to enhance performance and comfort.
Powertrain Enhancements in the S-Class
The new S-Class boasts significant improvements under the hood. Buyers can choose from an updated inline-six engine in the S450 and S500 models, now known as the “M256 Evo.” This engine generates a remarkable 443 lb-ft (600 Newton-meters) of torque, a boost of 30 lb-ft (40 Nm) over its predecessor. Additionally, with the overboost function, the torque can temporarily reach 472 lb-ft (640 Nm).
For those opting for the more powerful S580 variant, Mercedes introduces the “M177 Evo” flat-plane crank V8. This engine delivers 530 horsepower and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque, providing gains of 34 hp and 37 lb-ft (50 Nm) compared to the previous model. Enhanced efficiency is achieved through a new firing order and an upgraded injection system.
Hybrid and Diesel Options
Mercedes is expanding its lineup to include a plug-in hybrid variant, the S580e. This model combines the revised six-cylinder engine with an electric motor, producing a total output of 74 additional horsepower. It is expected to offer over 62 miles (100 kilometers) of electric range based on the WLTP cycle.
In compliance with stricter emissions regulations, the S350d and S450d diesel models will feature the new “OM 656 Evo” engine. Additionally, Mercedes will introduce an electrically heated catalytic converter, enabling faster pollutant reduction during cold starts.
Innovative Features and Technology
To enhance maneuverability, the S-Class will offer rear-wheel steering as standard, allowing for a turning angle of 4.5 degrees. For those requiring more agility, an optional 10-degree system is available. This feature significantly reduces the turning radius on long-wheelbase models.
Mercedes has also refined the standard air suspension, which now pre-adjusts its damping based on anticipated road conditions. This advanced system utilizes cloud-based data to predict irregularities, ensuring a smoother ride.
A Focus on Design
While the redesigned S-Class is set to feature aesthetic upgrades, Mercedes has opted for subtlety in its styling changes. The three-pointed star motif will be integrated into the headlights and taillights, continuing a trend from previous models. Despite these innovations, the interior design remains a topic of speculation, especially regarding its reliance on digital displays.
Market Position and Sales Insights
