Giannis Antetokounmpo on Bucks Future: “It’s Beyond My Control”
Giannis Antetokounmpo’s 2025-26 campaign with the Milwaukee Bucks closed amid injury and uncertainty. The season ended with questions about his long-term future with the franchise.
Injury and season finale
Antetokounmpo suffered a left-knee hyperextension and bone bruise on March 15. The injury happened after an awkward landing following a dunk. He did not return to action after that game.
The official end of the Bucks’ season came on April 12 at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia. Antetokounmpo, 31 and a two-time MVP, said he did not know whether that night would be his last with the team.
Contract status and decisions ahead
He remains under contract for the 2026-27 season. He also holds a player option for 2027-28. He is eligible to sign an extension starting Oct. 1.
Bucks co-owner Wes Edens told Filmogaz.com the franchise expects the superstar to either sign an extension or be moved in a trade. The organization has not clarified whether Antetokounmpo will still be on the roster to make that choice if a decision comes earlier.
Antetokounmpo said he would weigh any significant offer carefully. He suggested the outcome is not entirely in his hands and said, “It’s Beyond My Control.”
Potential offers and timing
The player could be presented with a multi-year deal. Reports have cited a possible four-year, $275 million extension as an example. Antetokounmpo added he needs an offer on the table before deciding.
Front office view and team alignment
General manager Jon Horst acknowledged uncertainty on April 7. He urged an honest assessment of the roster and a clear path forward.
Horst said the club must decide whether it has alignment with Antetokounmpo and ownership. The Bucks’ ownership group includes co-owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam, as well as Edens.
Horst described options that include an extension, a trade, or other solutions by the Oct. 1 checkpoint. He emphasized the need for a realistic appraisal before committing to a direction.
Offseason calendar and broader stakes
The Bucks will hold exit interviews in Milwaukee on April 13. The next major league date is the draft lottery on May 10. Milwaukee is likely to land a top-10 pick for the first time since 2016.
The team does not fully control its final draft slot. A 2020 trade involving Jrue Holiday could trigger a pick swap with New Orleans if certain lottery movement occurs. The NBA draft is scheduled for late June, followed by free agency.
Doc Rivers said the club’s timeline to contention depends largely on whether it keeps Antetokounmpo or pursues a rebuild. The Bucks won 32 games this season, the second-fewest in his tenure.
Key decisions will unfold over the summer and into October. The organization and player will need clear communication to define a shared path.
