Hungary’s Next PM Péter Magyar Urges ‘Orbán’s Puppets’ to Resign
In a sweeping electoral victory, Hungary’s next Prime Minister, Péter Magyar, has pledged to restore the country’s position as a robust European and NATO ally. His remarks were delivered to a large crowd in Budapest following a decisive defeat of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz Party.
Péter Magyar’s Aspirations for Hungary
After winning the election, Magyar expressed his commitment to representing Hungarian interests on the European stage. “Our country’s place is in Europe,” he stated emphatically. He aims to visit multiple European capitals, starting with Warsaw and Vienna, before heading to Brussels. This journey is integral to his strategy of unlocking billions in frozen EU funds meant for Hungary.
Focus on EU Relations
- Magyar intends to bring home EU funds due to Hungary.
- His administration will join the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.
- He emphasizes restoring checks and balances within the government.
Magyar is keen on rejuvenating Hungary’s democratic practices. He assured the public that his government would guarantee democratic functioning, a pledge that resonates with many citizens desperate for reform.
Calls for Resignation of ‘Orbán’s Puppets’
In a bold move, Magyar called for the immediate resignation of Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok and other state leaders appointed during Orbán’s administration. He labeled these officials as “puppets” representing the interests of the ruling party, rather than the people of Hungary.
“I call on the President of the Republic to immediately ask the winner to form a government and then leave office,” said Magyar. He also referenced other key positions, including the Presidents of the Curia and the Judicial Office, urging them to step down without delay.
Electoral Results
With nearly 99% of the votes counted, Magyar’s coalition is projected to secure a significant majority, estimating two-thirds of the 199 seats in the Hungarian Parliament with 138 seats. The Fidesz Party is anticipated to retain around 55 seats. Additionally, the far-right Our Homeland Movement is likely to enter Parliament with six seats.
This election saw over 90,000 Hungarians voting from abroad, while approximately 224,000 cast ballots from alternative addresses. The final vote tally is pending as these ballots are yet to be fully counted.
Magyar’s victory represents a pivotal shift in Hungary’s political landscape, with a focus on restoring integrity and aligning the nation with European allies. The coming weeks will be crucial as he embarks on forming his government and addressing the challenges ahead.
