Gurgaon Traffic Hotspots to Undergo Revamp in CAQM Anti-Pollution Plan
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has earmarked 17 junctions for decongestion work. The move forms part of a CAQM-linked anti-pollution strategy to cut vehicular emissions.
Scope and locations
The sites were chosen for heavy traffic and frequent idling. Authorities say these conditions raise pollution levels.
- Sector 48-49 and South City-II
- Sector 40-45 and Cyber Park
- Sector 4-5
- Rezang La Chowk
- Modern Bazar near Mayfield Garden
- Opposite Tau Devi Lal Park (Sector 22)
- Sector Road 72A and Sector 33
- Arcadia Mall junction
- Sector 9 Chowk
- Sector 4-7 Chowk
- Daultabad flyover
- Millennium City Centre Metro Station
- Sector 41-45
- Bakhtawar Chowk
- Unitech Cyber Park
- Ghata Power House
- Kaushal Chowk
Planned interventions
The project will redesign intersection traffic through engineering measures. The aim is to reduce waiting time and cut emissions.
GMDA will optimise signal cycles to move more vehicles per cycle. The agency will also undertake geometric improvements and traffic channelisation.
Slip lanes and U-turns
Slip lanes at several junctions will be lengthened. Officials say this will prevent blockage and allow smoother left turns.
Free U-turns will be created on central verges. Vehicles will be able to complete turns without halting at lights.
Medians and lane discipline
Unplanned and misaligned medians will be corrected and standardised. This is meant to improve lane discipline and traffic flow.
Additional site-specific fixes will follow. Channelisation and small geometric works are planned where needed.
Cost, timeline and procurement
GMDA has floated the tender for the scheme. Work will start after the bidding process concludes.
The authority expects most work to finish within a year. The project budget is Rs 7.5 crore.
Drivers’ complaints and air quality context
Commuters have long reported long waits at junctions during peak hours. Local representatives cited multiple signal cycles and blocked slip roads as recurring problems.
Puneet Pahwa, general secretary of Sector 46, said poor lane discipline worsens congestion. He said vehicles meant to go straight often block turning lanes.
The initiative targets several Gurgaon traffic hotspots identified under the CAQM anti-pollution plan. The city recorded a monthly average PM2.5 of 116 µg/m³ in March 2026.
GMDA executive engineer Amit Godara said signal optimisation and engineering fixes will lower idle time. He added that both major and minor interventions are part of the strategy.
Filmogaz.com will monitor progress as work moves from tender to construction. Officials expect the changes to ease traffic and reduce emissions.
